All humans beings are entrepreneurs. When we were in the caves, we were self-employed… finding our food, feeding our-selves. That’s where human history began. As civilization came, we suppressed it. We became “labor” because they stamped us, “You are labor”. We forgot that we are entrepreneurs. – Muhammad Yunus
This great quote from Muhammad Yunus kicks off the book The Start-Up Of YOU (affiliate link). This book is written by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha. The tag-line “Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career“ puts a relevant context to a fascinating book. Of course the book does its share of promoting the social professional network LinkedIn as a great tool to building your personal brand and career, I’m not blaming Mr Hoffman for that.
Not About Cover Letters And Resumes
This book is not about cover letters and resumes, instead you will learn the best practices of Silicon Valley start-ups, and how to apply these entrepreneurial strategies to your career. You will learn the importance of seeing yourself as a start-up and always be in permanent beta mode, seeing your personal brand as a permanent beta is essentially a lifelong commitment to continuous personal growth. I think personal branding is a modern form of self improvement, and when I’m reading this book it makes me even more sure.
Get busy livin’, or get busy dyin’
Your Skill Set
The permanent beta mind-set alone won’t transform your career. There are real skills involved in becoming the entrepreneur of your life. The Start Up Of You introduce you how to develop your competitive advantage and then formulate a plan based on your competitive advantage. You will also learn how and when you should pivot to your plan B. I like the chapter about building real lasting relationships and deploying them into a powerful professional network. I think they connect the online and offline world regarding networking synergies in a great way with this book. This really opens up the readers eyes why you should networking, being resourceful, and staying in motion. When you are approaching your career with actions like this you are attracting more and better opportunities in life.
The person passionate about what he or she is doing will outwork and outlast the guy motivated solely by making money.
The Bottom Line
Reflect a moment on the quote I started this post with and you will maybe see a bigger picture here. We become labor, we forgot that we are entrepreneurs. Even if we don’t live in caves today, I still believe because of the rapid economic changes we experience we must feeding our-ourselves in an increasingly greater extent than the previous generation. What do you think? Today’s employers do not offer policies of lifetime employment, nine to five is dying. Take your responsibility, start a side project and get your self into motion, hustle! This book really support people with both new skill set and step to step guides how to join the entrepreneurial movement.
