Discount Is Short Term Marketing

We can see how companies is trying to copy the successful Groupon strategy these days. The latest company in Sweden trying this is Eniro, we think the attention they want most is from the local small businesses that power their revenue model.

This is a very powerful and simple Internet marketing strategy, they are just building huge email lists and selling it. Groupon is doing this very successfully with a sales force and a traditional smile and dial tactic.

Discount as a marketing strategy

In this video we talk about the benefits from the perspective of the local small businesses who are buying those packages. We talked about Sprint vs Marathon earlier this week; we are not a big believer in this kind of discounts as an online marketing strategy for small local businesses, this is short term thinking and you are not attracting long term super hardcore fans. (We are not talking about Facebook deals here).

We want to know how you think about Discounts as a marketing strategy?

Both advertising and promotion are types of marketing, involved in getting information about a product out to the buying public. Advertising is usually undertaken by mid- to large-level firms, which come up with cohesive messages that help strengthen the brand and aim to build long term sales.

I think discounts are kind of good marketing strategy depending
to your product category. In addition, consumers are becoming more and more
concern about price and that could be a reason for lower price competition.

Discount Marketing Strategy should be good for the business
which has huge profit room. A discount has to be attractive enough to encourage
a purchaser buy right now, and often there has to be trade off between profit
and customer attainment. Discount marketing seems good if you have a lot of
products and few different categories and you offer few from each category at
the lower price.

What do you think guys.....Will Groupon, Eniro, Foursquare & Co. Stand a chance now when Facebook is launching Deals? And what do you think about this discount strategy?

I have a client that tried letsdeal.se last sunday....the deal was sent to 30 000 people and about 100 took the deal, it's a no-profit-deal for them but they see it like 100% marketing...

Thanks Jonas for your question. We will answer it tomorrow in our Q&A session. Tune in tomorrow and we can discuss it further.
