What will we write about

In this post I’m covering step six in my blogging series; how to blog (step one). One question I always get when I talk to brands and companies about blogging is what should we write about?

Think about the main point of your post

First you need do figure out your point of view in advance, don’t just write in darkness. You need to tap into and understand what your audience want to engage in. A good thing is to ask them to leave comments, opinions, feedback and questions about your posts. When you do this you will get help to create content and build a relevance around your blog. Remember the audience perspective; What’s in it for me?

Headlines are important

I always try to write 3 titles before I write a post. (Yes, I know my headlines still sucks) It’s always a challenge to create a heavy headline but when you nail it, you have a great first impression for your post and it shows up in search results and syndication sites.

Good bloggers are great headline writers. One thing that is proved is that numbers in headlines bring in more traffic. You can also use unexpected words. You can use tools like Google keyword suggestion tool or Freekeywords.wordtracker.com to build your own list of relevant keywords for your blog.

Create content for your post

Spend more time reading than writing; I read books and other blog posts at least one hour every day. This is an important input to transform into a content machine. The more relevant the content appears, the more magnetic it becomes. Here you can put in your business perspective, products or services. Mix it up with the audience goals and values. The value of content is everything today and competition is growing every day.

You also need to think about the aspect of timing like seasons, holidays, trending news and relevant events in your industry. You can mix posts with timely, timeless, long, short, personal and professional content. Build great content and you will establish your blog as an authority. Remember call to action; we want our audience to take action after reading. I wrote about this earlier in 5 calls to action after reading the post.

 Mattias,

Groovy colors in this post! And excellent mention of the keyword and Google tools.

I found that setting my headlines before I had text written limited me as I wrote.  Some are not phased by this.  But those that are might encourage this:

Create a working title to hone once you feel your text is complete.  Or, start without one and use the title like icing on a cake.

When I tried writing the text about the topic first, my posts seemed to come together better.

Hope that helps!

~Keri

Thanks Keri for your help with completing this post. Great input from you as usual. I like groovy colors. :)
