The third step in the process is to understand why your company should have a presence in social media. Social media is an opportunity not a necessity. It’s an opportunity to build relationships with your customers and create an experience with your brand that was impossible before. Of course we will find companies with success, even if they don’t have a social media presence, but those companies will in the future not be the leaders of their industry.
Social media is a commitment
Social media isn’t expensive, thus it can be expensive because it will cost you your valuable time so you need have a clear GOAL to commit yourself and your team to. If you don’t have a strong goal online you are starting with a hope for failure.
We can’t focus on social media yet
I hear this all the time right now. Executives are saying things like we need to focus on basics first like traditional sales and marketing. Yes that’s good! But wake up and realize that the rules of business are changing and your lack of knowledge makes the bottom line suffer. You should integrate social media into traditional sales and marketing. It’s not about to do one or the other, period.
Choose one of those 3 goals
I have learned from the best in the game that you and your team members should choose one of those points for your social strategy and stick to it.
- Brand awareness (Drive awareness of your company and build relationships).
- Lead generation (Convert leads into sales).
- Community (Customer service and loyalty programs).
What do you think?
I think Jay Baer is probably one of the best when it comes to social strategies. I can’t even touch the keyboard without giving him credit for everything I learned from him. Check out his book: The Now Revolution I love the chapter about business cultures.

I agree with you about Jay Baer. I have not yet read his book, but its very high on my list.
Its amazing to me that many businesses now have social media on their radar, but there is still confusion on how it applies in a business sense.
