With the right crew we will find the right path

The first step before even turning the key; make sure you have the right people involved in your social media team. You need to establish a foundation with the right culture for an authentic engagement with your audience. I think Jay Baer and Amber Naslund hit the nail on the head with the chapter about organizations and corporate culture in The Now Revolution book. It’s hard work to implement social media if the corporate culture is not mature for it. Because each staff member has to play their part to “be” social and understand how to answer the new social media telephone.

Social media is not a title

Many people believe the first step in a social media strategy is to set up a presence on various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn; that’s wrong! Instead the first step of a social media strategy plan is to get the right people involved around the social media table and then get the wrong people to step down. A Corporate title has nothing to do with social media.

Scale it right from the beginning

You will never succeed with social media if you don’t like people and understand relationships. These people are very often found in the sales and customer service department. You don’t need to micromanage each second when you have the right people aboard and the need to lead everyone as a social media support decreases. Scale it right from the beginning. I don’t know exactly where we end up on this journey, but I know if we have the right crew aboard; then we will find the right path.

We don't need to be on every (possible) social media platform. Facebook might be the best location for some individuals or companies but for others maybe Twitter or blog is that perfect location. Everything depends on many factors but companies are not doing their homework (research, etc.).

Right people, right team - is the key, because they can suggest the right path/option. Well, I think it will take some time but social media is changing so soon my friends soon :)

Its amazing with an industry called social media, that so many people forget that the core of "social" is people.  You are so right, Mattias.  Get that crew right first.

@LaurindaShaver:disqus Thanks for your comment, you are right it seems like most people miss the first word "social" and only read "Media". Scary! :)
